James Valcq featured Guest at the Door Kinetic Arts Festival

James Valcq, Co-Artistic Director of Third Avenue Playhouse will be a featured guest for the Door Kinetic Arts Festival on Saturday, June 17th at Bjorklunden, just south of Baileys Harbor in Door County Wisconsin. Valcq will discuss musical adaptation as part of the Creative Conversation series at 11am.
The Door Kinetic Arts Festival offers performing artists the opportunity to come together, collaborate, foster projects, present work and exchange ideas in the process of developing new work.
Running June 11-18, 2017 at Björklunden in Baileys Harbor, the DKAF provides Door County residents and visitors a peek into the creative process through two staged readings, a dance presentation and the premiere of a commissioned film.
DKAF Executive Director and Third avenue Playhouse board member Alan Kopischke sees the DKAF as, “a celebration of multiple art forms right as the summer arts’ season starts. It brings several arts disciplines together in one space in one week, with those disciplines and artists responding to each other.”
Inviting James Valq to the table offers a unique opportunity to delve onto the creative process of adapting work to the stage. “It is always a delight to hear James talk!” offers Kopischke. “James is an original creative artist. He has developed such unique concoctions as “Maid to Marry,” “Madame Sherry” and the “Velvet Gentleman.” Each has a fascinating, surprising and unique structure. And each is, to different degrees, an adaptation of existing material – with James’ unique spin.”
Valcq’s best-known adaptation is the wildly successful musical “The Spitfire Grill”. Written with collaborator Fred Alley, “Spitfire” has been seen in over 600 productions worldwide since its off-Broadway premiere at Playwrights Horizons in 2001. His other adaptations include works based on short stories, children’s books, and even oral histories. Valcq will discuss the transfer of a piece from one medium to another, as well as how music can enhance storytelling.
