Third Avenue Playhouse announces a benefit performance of John Logan’s RED at the year-round professional theatre in downtown Sturgeon Bay. On June 29, 2017, a portion of ticket sales will go to the Miller Art Museum.
Founded in 1975 through the generosity of Gerhard and Ruth Miller, the Miller Art Museum is a non-profit cultural arts institution, open all year, to provide a variety of arts opportunities to thousands of children and adults from near and far. The galleries feature changing exhibits with a rich diversity of expression fostering the creative life of the community.
“Inviting the Miller was a natural progression in our production schedule,” relates TAP’s Maketing and Development Director Amy Ensign. In the play, famed abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko asks his assistant Ken, “What do you see?” What is art? And who gets to decide anyway? “It seemed a perfect show for a Miller Art Museum benefit.”
Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing.
Raw and provocative, RED is a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting. Winner of six Tony Awards, this sizzling 90-minute drama is one of the most intellectually riveting shows to hit Broadway and features Drew Brhel and Matt Frye.
Returning to TAP this year is Drew Brhel, appearing in two productions-Red and Candide. Last Summer, audiences saw Drew in Isaac’s Eye, Madame Sherry, and The Gin Game. Other rôles at TAP include Matt Friedman in Talley’s Folly, Bellomy in The Fantasticks (both summer of 2014) and Frank in Educating Rita (summer of 2015). Drew makes his home in Milwaukee, where he has worked for Skylight Music Theatre, Next Act, Milwaukee Chamber, and Milwaukee Rep. Drew has also spent many years with Shakespeare companies from coast to coast, including Door County’s own Door Shakespeare.
You may purchase tickets to the Miller Art Museum benefit performance of RED by calling Third Avenue Playhouse at 920.743.1760 or by visiting the TAP daytime box office at 234 N Third Avenue, directly across the street form the theatre. Be sure to mention the Miller Art Museum!
